Cycling Team Caps Off Season with Multiple Championships and Podiums

In just one season, the Killington Mountain School (KMS) Cycling Team has grown from a group of true beginner riders to a team of New England champions.

Last weekend, the 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships crowned 10 more national champions on the third day of competition and KMS Cycling Team rider Erin Donohue, of Hanover, N.H., took a third-place podium finish in the Junior Women’s (17-18) Division with a time of 36:21.

KMS Cycling Team Riding High After Recent Victories; Finishes Fifth Overall in Prep School League

Local athletes from the Killington Mountain School Cycling Team, the junior racing division of the Woodstock Bicycle Club, have been on fire this season, most recently winning three categories (Men’s A, Men’s B and Women’s A) at the Profile High School Road Race in Bethlehem, N.H., on May 9. Members of the team also posted top-10 finishes in support of the race winners. The team finished fifth overall in the New England Road Cycling League, a series of bicycle road racing events where private and public secondary school cycling teams throughout northern New England compete for individual and team awards.

Killington Mountain School Celebrates Most Successful Season in School’s History; Recognition Awards Announced

Killington Mountain School (KMS), one of the top ski academies in the country, showcased unprecedented results across alpine, freestyle and snowboard disciplines during the 2010-2011 season, to cap off its most successful season in the school’s 36-year history in the heart of the Green Mountains of Vermont. J4 Eastern Champion and Woodstock Native Spencer Smith Finishes Incredible Season with Giant Slalom Gold at CanAms in Mont Tremblant, Quebec

Woodstock resident and Killington Mountain School J4 alpine racer Spencer Smith topped off his incredible season by taking gold at CanAms in Mont Tremblant, Quebec on April 2. He competed against a field of more than 60 top, North American athletes from Canada and the United States in the J4 age category and its Canadian equivalent.

Killington Winter Sports Club/Killington Mountain School Racer Brian O’Rourke Wins USSA’s George Tormey Series Overall Title

Brian O’Rourke, a Killington Winter Sports Club/Killington Mountain School J2 alpine racer, has won the George Tormey Series overall title. From New York and a student at Fordham Preparatory School, O’Rourke’s overall win in the series earns him an automatic spot on the 2011-2012 VARA Team.

Killington Mountain School Freestyler Dan Rosenblum, of Stamford, Conn., Takes Overall Ski Halfpipe Title in U.S. Revolution Tour

Dan Rosenblum, a 16-year-old freestyle skier on the Killington Mountain School Freestyle Team, won the U.S. Revolution Tour Overall Ski Halfpipe title this season, based on his results are seasonal Tour events throughout the country. This is the first season that the Rev Tour has included freeskiing in competition. Past seasons, the tour has been snowboarders only. KMS’ freestyle team includes student-athletes who compete in moguls, freeride and sometimes both.

Killington Mountain School’s Wyatt Queirolo Wins Super-G, Super Combined and Slalom at K2 National Championships in Canada

)— Killington Mountain School’s Wyatt Queirolo, of Farmington, Conn., showed continued success this week, taking Canada by storm Monday and Tuesday at the K2 National Championships in Collingwood, Ontario, as he took gold in the Super-G, super combined, and slalom races. Queirolo is building on his earlier victories in the Vermont State Championships and his fourth-place finish at the J3 Marriott Eastern Alpine Championships Super G.

Killington Mountain School J4 alpine racer Spencer Smith, of Woodstock, continues to shine on the USSA race circuit, winning three of four race runs at the Marriott J4 Eastern Championships to take the overall title. He won both runs of Sunday’s slalom en route to a race victory then won the first run of Tuesday’s giant slalom on his way to a second-place finish.

Killington Mountain School racer Jonathan Schwartz, of Brookline, Mass., led KMS and Killington Winter Sports Club/KMS racers in age-class racing this past weekend, with a win in giant slalom at the Tecnica Winter Finish at Dartmouth Skiway on Saturday. On Sunday he took second in the boys’ J3 division at the annual Suicide Six Slush Cup in Woodstock.

Killington Mountain School’s Second-Year J3 Alpine Racer Mikala Smith, of Castleton, Wins Her First Two J 1/2 Super G Races of Her Career

In her first J 1-2 Super G race, Killington Mountain School’s second-year J3 alpine racer Mikala Smith, of Castleton, Vt., put down two winning runs at Attitash Resort in New Hampshire on Monday. Although she ran into trouble in the second run of Saturday's GS and was unable to match her ninth-place first run, she stepped up with a fifth-place finish in Sunday's slalom. Not only did she take three top-10 finishes in four races, but she did so in her first races as a nationally seeded competitor.

Representing the United States, Killington Mountain School’s Bryan Zemba ’10, of Bridgewater, took gold Sunday in dual moguls at the Junior World Freestyle Championships held in Jyväskylä, Finland. His win will earn him a U.S. Freestyle Ski Team C Team nomination for being named Junior World Champion. Zemba took 11th in Friday’s Europa Cup, one step below the World Cup.

It was a weekend for championships and two skiers from the Killington Mountain School Freestyle Team took home top honors at the 2011 Freestyle Junior Olympics held in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Nick Keating (KMS ’10), of Waterbury Center and a member of the U.S. Development Group, took top honors in moguls on Friday to win the 2011 Junior National Mogul Championship, while Ari Schneider, of Rutland, took the 2011 Junior National Combined Championship. Keating took silver in dual moguls on Sunday as well.

Killington Mountain School Alum Zachary Clayton ’07 Earns All-America Title

Zachary Clayton, a 2007 Killington Mountain School graduate, earned NCAA Division I All-America First Team honors with his third-place finish on Saturday in slalom at the 2011 NCAA Skiing Championships held at Stowe Mountain Resort. He had already earned All-America Second Team Honors with his 10th-place finish in Wednesday’s giant slalom. Clayton, of Manassas, Va., is a junior at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, majoring in Recreation Management & Policy.

James Ferri, of West Simsbury, Conn., and a ninth-grade student-athlete at Killington Mountain School, took silver in slalom at the USSA Marriott Junior Championships – J3 Eastern Regionals (Junior Olympics) on Saturday at Okemo Mountain. Ferri finished fourth in giant slalom on Sunday. He was one of seven KMS racers to qualify for Junior Olympics.

Of the 14 racers that the Killington Winter Sports Club/Killington Mountain School (KWSC/KMS) Competition Programs sent to the Vermont J4 State Championships this weekend at Stratton Mountain, Woodstock’s Spencer Smith and Bridgewater’s Ava Mattsson landed on top of the podium, each being crowned the MVP Health Care VARA J4 State Champion in giant slalom. Smith was also named the J4 State Champion in slalom for his victory in Saturday’s race.

KMS Racer and Woodstock’s Julian Scherding Crowned Vermont Cup Champion

Boosted by his seventh-place result in Saturday's Vermont Cup Finals slalom at Killington Resort, Killington Mountain School junior Julian Scherding, of Woodstock, was crowned Vermont Cup champion for the 2011 season. He was joined on the overall podium by Andrew Kimbell, also of Woodstock, who slipped from first to third after hiking in the second run of Sunday's slalom.

The Killington Mountain School (KMS) Freestyle Team went 1-2-3-4 in men’s moguls on Friday at the USSA Eastern Freestyle Eastern Divisional Championships at Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. Nick Keating (KMS ’10), of Waterbury Center, took top honors, followed by Bridgewater’s Bryan Zemba ’10 with KMS junior Darius Baradaran, of Goshen, N.Y., finishing third. KMS senior Tyler Wadhams, of Hebron, Conn., just missed the podium in fourth place. Zemba also was named Eastern Divisional MVP. KMS sophomore Colin Lang, of Rhinebeck, N.Y., was named Eastern Divisional Most Improved.

Wyatt Queirolo, of Farmington, Conn., and a ninth-grader at Killington Mountain School, was crowned J3 State Champion at this weekend’s MVP Healthcare Vermont J3 State Championships at Okemo Mountain. Queirolo went three-for-three, winning Super-G, slalom and giant slalom races in a competitive field. The overall title is based on finishes in all three disciplines. The entire KMS J3 girls’ team and six from the boys’ contingent competed in the state championships. In addition, seven J3 racers have qualified for Junior Olympics.

At the second to last USASA Southern Vermont series event at Mount Snow this past weekend, three student-athletes from Rutland led the way for Killington Mountain School, sweeping the podium on Sunday in halfpipe competition in the 13-15 skier division. Killington Mountain School Student-Athletes Across All Disciplines Dominate Weekend Events and Easily Find the Podium; J3 Racers Capture MVC Banner for School-Record Sixth Consecutive Week

It was a whirlwind weekend of podium results across all disciplines and age groups for Killington Mountain School (KMS) student-athletes. The J3 team led the way, capturing the J3 Mid-Vermont Council (MVC) team banner at Killington for the sixth consecutive race of the season—a KMS record. Over the course of the MVC season, the team took 25 podiums (no fewer than three podium finishes in any race), 40 top-10 finishes, and 56 front-page (top-15) finishes. The entire girls’ team and six from the boys’ contingent have qualified to compete at the J3 State Championships this Friday at Okemo Mountain.

In addition, the KMS Freestyle team earned multiple podiums at the USSA Eastern Freestyle Killington Klassic in single moguls, dual moguls, halfpipe, and slopestyle events. Also last week, three student-athletes from the men’s J2 team—Kyle Burcin of Basking Ridge, N.J., Cameron Price of Rutland, and Dan Martin of Belmont, Mass.— qualified from the Eastern Region for J2 National Junior Olympics at Sugarloaf in March. In women’s racing, senior Allison Visconti of Ridgefield, Conn., won the second run en route to a third-place overall finish in Thursday’s FIS National Junior Race slalom at Blackwater, New Hampshire.

Local J4 Racers Bring Home MVC Beanpot Trophy for the Third Time This Season for Killington Winter Sports Club/Killington Mountain School

Despite blustery cold temperatures, local J4 “Jones” racers from the Killington Winter Sports Club/Killington Mountain School’s alpine team turned out in force Sunday at Pico Mountain, bringing home the coveted Mid-Vermont Council team trophy, the Beanpot, for the third time out of four races so far this season.

Ava Mattson, of Bridgewater, took silver for the girls, while Marina Rotella, of Rutland, took bronze. Raichle Johnson, of Pittsfield, put down a fifth-place first run to take eighth overall for the girls. For the boys, Spencer Smith, a full-time Killington Mountain School student-athlete from Woodstock, won the giant slalom, Ian Clarke, of Pipersville, Penn., took second and local Will Coen, of Stockbridge, finished in sixth. Malcolm Mead, of Morristown, N.J. came from 23rd, had the seventh best second run and finished in ninth. Overall, KWSC/KMS athletes owned 14 of the top-30 spots for the day.

The Killington Mountain School Freestyle team continued to dominate the Eastern Championship Series this past weekend at New York’s Bristol Mountain, with KMS athletes winning all six competitions while claiming a total of 33 top-10 finishes. Bryan Zemba ’10, of Bridgewater, went three for three at the Toyota Freestyle Fest, finding his way to the top of the podium Saturday and Sunday in moguls, and Monday in duals.

KILLINGTON, Vt. (Jan. 10, 2011)—The Killington Mountain School (KMS) Freestyle Team owned the Eastern USSA Freestyle event this weekend at Sunday River, in Bethel, Maine, with Nick Keating (KMS ’10) and a PG athlete at KMS winning the men’s single moguls event on Saturday while KMS Junior Aspen Witt, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., won for the women. Sterling Crescimanno ’10 took second, Bryan Zemba ’10 placed fifth, and Wadhams landed in seventh. KMS PG athlete Kelsey Albert ’07 took bronze for the women, followed by Lizzy Smith ’10 (4), Burcin (6), Alta Curtis ’10 (7), Megan Moores (9), and Victoria Smith ’10 (10). KMS women filled seven of the top 10 spots in moguls on Saturday while the KMS men took 10 of the top 20 spots.

On Day Two 16-year-old Kayla Burcin, of Basking Ridge, N.J. won the dual mogul event on Sunday for the women and Tyler Wadhams, of Hebron, Conn., took top honors in duals for the men.

Killington Mountain School J3 Team Retains MVC Banner with Carolyn Hofley, Mika Smith and James Ferri on the Podium

KILLINGTON, Vt. (Jan. 10, 2011)—In its second strong showing in as many races, the Killington Mountain School J3 Team put three student-athletes on the podium at the second Mid-Vermont Race held at Pico yesterday. The team posted enough top-20 finishes to retain the Mid-Vermont Council banner for the second straight week. The J3 Banner is awarded to the winning team each week, as teams vie for the J3 Mid-Vermont Council team title at the end of the year. Rankings from these council races also are used to select racers for the J3 States at the end of the season.

Carolyn Hofley, of Bow, N.H., took top honors for the girl’s team with a combined time of 1:18.74 while Mika Smith, of Castleton, Vt., won the second run and came in second with 1:20.43. James Ferri, of Farmington, Ct., who won silver in the first race of the season, put himself at the top of the podium for the boy’s team with a combined time of 1:13.70.

The new name, the Killington Winter Sports Club (KWSC), was created to encompass all of the programming and activities that the club offers today, which is significantly more than what the Club was created for in 1961.

Five Killington Mountain School Alpine Student-Athletes Named to the 2011 VARA Team

KILLINGTON, Vt. (Sept. 13, 2010)—Five alpine racers from Killington Mountain School have been named to the 2010-2011 VARA team. The VARA Team is a select group of VARA member Vermont ski racers who have earned the right to wear the VARA Team vest and have earned free entries into Vermont races by meeting certain criteria during the previous season.

Killington Mountain School Hosts Annual Golf Tournament Sept. 24

Killington Mountain School, a school consistently ranked among the best five-month ski academies in the country, will host its 24th Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 24 at Green Mountain National Golf Course in Killington. Monies raised will help to support the school’s Athletic Fund, which ensures that KMS student-athletes have the resources and facilities they need and deserve to complement their outstanding work ethic and drive to perform their best.

KMS' Freestyle Program Director and Mogul Coach Deb Newson Named 2010 USSA Development Coach of the Year

Deb Newson, Killington Mountain School’s (KMS) freestyle program director and mogul coach, has been named the recipient of one of USSA’s (U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association) Gold Awards, the 2010 USSA Development Coach of the Year. Newson accepted the award at the USSA Spring Congress Awards Ceremony in Park City, Utah on Friday.
