With over 200 attendees and almost as many great items available for auction, the 2012 KMS auction provided a fundraising boost and a night of fun at Killington Resort. All of us at KMS would like to thank our supporters who came out in '70s costumes and filled the ballroom as well as everyone who donated auction items and volunteered his or her time to make this event a success.
With all the excitement, only one item from the silent auction remains. A pair of 2012 Scott Punisher skis, size 172 cm, with Fischer X-14 bindings, did not get any bids (we think everyone was having too much fun to realize the bindings were included, making this a great package for anyone looking for a highly versatile twin-tip that handles groomers and hardpack as well as the park and pipe).
Since no one scooped up this package on Saturday, we are offering one more chance at the skis. The highest bid received via email by noon (Eastern Standard Time) on Monday, March 5 will take the skis. Email Lori Hong at lhong@killingtonmountainschool.org with your bid for the ski and bindings and you could soon be enjoying a new pair of skis! (Thanks to the Forerunner for the skis and bindings.)
The 37th winter at KMS opened on Sunday, Nov. 6. After dorm residents were given a chance to move in and student-athletes and parents met with teachers in the morning—with a few getting a chance at the snowboard team’s new slack line—the KMS food service crew put on a delicious lunch in the Revelon Dining Room. KMS head chef Rhonda Benoit’s spread of sandwiches, salad, and delicious chili fueled an afternoon that began with the now-traditional community meeting in the gym. Head of School Tao Smith greeted the community, highlighted some of the personnel changes since April, and reviewed two important parts of the KMS experience—recognition of those who allow our student-athletes to pursue their dreams and accepting the possibility of failure, along with the opportunity to learn from it, when taking risks. If you weren’t able to make it to the community meeting, see below for highlights. From the community meeting, student-athletes and parents went to sport-specific meetings with coaches and program directors to review the athletic programs for each group of athletes. Finally, day students and all parents left before dorm students and staff held the first dorm meeting of the year, featuring both active learning exercises presented by Skye Whitehurst and the usual beginning-of-the-year overview of logistics, provided in conjunction with flying candy by Phil Anderson, who has been named head of dorm.
KILLINGTON, Vt. (Nov. 7, 2011)— Due in part to the school’s growth spurt the past few years and the addition of the new nine-month academic program, Tao Smith, head of school at Killington Mountain School (KMS), recently announced that Freestyle Program Director Deb Newson has been named the new director of student life and assistant director of school operations for the ski academy. Matt Gnoza will be returning to his former position as the freestyle program director and remain the head mogul coach for KMS, but is also taking on the new role of director of sport development for KMS, where additionally he will oversee the freeskiing and snowboarding programs as well as athletic facility projects slated for KMS.
