The 2012 alpine competition season came to a close as the alpine men's team finished a five-day race series in Panorama, British Columbia, and Piper Jenne wrapped up the USSA U16 Talent Identification camp in Utah. Piper had a 10th-place finish in the slalom and a 21st-place finish in the giant slalom, racing against the top finishers in J3 regional championships nationwide. In Panorama, all six racers on the trip had strong results against a high-caliber field—other competitors brought World Cup and Nor Am experience to the event—but Cameron Price had the strongest result of the week, finishing 14th in the second of two GS races. Wyatt Queirolo, Dylan Malone and Mike Ferri moved up more than 20 spots from their starting positions, while James (28th in the second GS) and Kyle (27th in the super G) were able to add top-30 finishes to the list.

To celebrate the last week of school, the all-dorm activity on Tuesday night was a trip to the Rutland Ben & Jerry's store for Free Cone Day. |
Matt Price wrapped up the J4 season with a 13th-place finish in the Can-Am giant slalom at Maine's Sugaloaf Resort. The Can-Am event brings together the top J4 athletes from the Eastern and Rocky Mountain regions of the United States as well as the top Ontario and Quebec racers of the same age group.
KMS will formally open the new Action Sports Training Center this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, sparkling cider toast and a short trampoline demonstration. The annual all-school awards and senior recognition ceremony will follow, with the light reception beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Heidi Robbins '07 is one of the Purple Knight student-athletes recognized by Saint Michael's College for National Student-Athlete Day. National Student-Athlete Day honors student-athletes nationwide for achieving excellence in the classroom and on the field, while making significant contributions to their schools and communities. At Saint Michael's, Heidi was one of the student-athletes recognized for maintaining a GPA above 3.7 while also competing in NCAA athletics.
USASA Nationals are ongoing at Copper Mountain, Colo.; KMS and KSC/KMS snowboarders have already captured a number of strong finishes, and the freeride team will be competing as the events switch to skiing. FIS racing is still underway at Panorama, British Columbia, with strong results from the KMS Men's Team, as well. Watch the snowboard, freeride and men's alpine Facebook pages for updates.
With a top-10 overall finish at the 2012 Eastern J3 Championships, Piper Jenne qualified for this April's USSA National Development System camp in Utah. In Utah, she will be skiing with the top J3 athletes from ski racing clubs and ski academies across the country under the guidance of U.S. Ski Team coaches, using the same facilities both on and off the hill—including USSA's Center of Excellence—as U.S. Ski Team athletes.
Ian Clarke, Alli Price and Jonny Schwartz qualified for Am-Cans, a series pitting the top J3-age racers in the Eastern U.S. and Eastern Canada against each other. Held this year at Quebec's Mont Tremblant, the event saw Alli Price take fourth in the giant slalom and 10th in the slalom, while Jonny Schwartz was 17th both days.
Meanwhile at Maine's Sunday River Resort, BOOST student-athletes Matt Price, Bobby Ryan and Grace Vollers were competing in J4 Eastern Championships alongside Quechee racer and future BOOST athlete Julia Denny. Matt led the way with ninth in the giant slalom and 11th in the slalom, while Bobby took 25th in the giant slalom and put down the second-fastest first run in the slalom before hiking his way to a 44th-place finish. Based on their results, both Matt and Bobby qualified for Can-Am competition this weekend at Sugarloaf. Grace took 30th in the giant slalom and 32nd in the slalom, while Julia took 23rd in the GS.
With the race calendar in flux, the men's and women's alpine teams headed to Maine's Sugarloaf Resort for a pair of Maine Spring Series slaloms. The weather continued to wreak havoc with the schedule, shortening the program to a single race, but KMS racers weren't deterred and took home 11 top-30 finishes. Dan Martin led the men in fourth place, just ahead of Julian Scherding (5), Wyatt Queirolo (7), Peter Spangler (15), Jeffry Griffen (27) and Tommy Shebell (29). Kara Van Herwarde led the women in third, while Kelly Rowland (9), Jerica McMahon (15) and Jessie McNeill (30) rounded out the top 30. Kara, Kelly and Jerica all put a season's worth of training to use in scoring career-best USSA results, while Michelle had the third-fastest first run, only 0.41 seconds behind the leader, but took an unscheduled detour on the second run en route to a 34th-place finish.
The annual all-school awards and senior recognition ceremony is on Saturday, April 7, will commence following a five o'clock reception in the Revelon Dining Hall and is a required event for KMS student-athletes not out of state for competitions; please also consider joining us for the 3:00 dedication of our new Action Sports Training Center, also on April 7. RSVP to Lori Hong—lhong@killingtonmountainschool.org—if you will be joining us for the dedication.
Cycling season is once again underway; visit the KMS Cycling Team blog to check their schedule for the upcoming weeks.
Although Killington will not be holding a pond-skimming event this year, the Development and Communications Teams at KMS are hard at work to find a suitable alternative for Tao to celebrate 100% participation in the Annual Fund by current KMS families. Donate online today so we can get to full participation and then email Lori Hong (lhong@killingtonmountainschool.org) with your [mostly] reasonable alternative suggestions to pond skimming.
Members of the alpine men's team and alpine women's team will be headed to Panorama, British Columbia, and to Stoneham, Quebec, in the coming week for a few more FIS races to wrap up the season, while top J4 athletes will be racing at Sugarloaf Resort from March 30 – April 2.
With FIS racing in the eastern U.S. coming to a close this past weekend, KMS racers and alumni have been busy getting their last in-country starts before heading out for Canadian races to wrap up the season. The men's team posted eight top-30 results from FIS Devo Finals at Sunday River this past weekend, with Andrew Kimbell (17) racing into the top 30 and Ben Scheu a tenth of the second out of the top 30 in Thursday's giant slalom. Dan Martin led the team in Saturday's slalom, tying for 21st as Julian Scherding skied his way into 25th, jumping over 50 spots from bib 81; Ben nearly halved his bib as he skied from the 49th start position into 26th place, as did Wyatt Queirolo in moving from 59th to 30th. Mike Ferri had the sixth-fastest first run of the day but ran into trouble in the second run and ended the day in 40th. Sunday's slalom saw James Ferri take 13th, just edging Dan (14) as Ben (28) and Julian (30) rounded out the top 30. Brian O'Rourke halved his start position, finishing 53rd after starting 124th.
College nationals also wrapped recently with Jim Ryan '09 and Zach Clayton '07 representing Colby College and the University of New Hampshire, respectively, at NCAA National Championships while Rob Visconti '09 represented Northeastern University in USCSA National Championships. Rob took 11th in the slalom and 17th in the giant slalom at Sunday River. Across the country at the 2012 NCAA National Championships in Montana, Jim tied for 18th in the giant slalom and 25th in the slalom while Zach took 25th in the giant slalom and 14th in the slalom.
In George Tormey Series racing at Bromley, Kara Van Herwarde led the women's team with a sixth-place finish; Michelle Martin (9), Jessie McNeill (11), Kelly Rowland (19), Heather Desino (25) and Molly Peek (28) rounded out the women's top 30. Sawyer Mattsson took sixth and Brendan Byron ninth for the men.
The J3 Team brought strong momentum from the Mid-Vermont Council season into the state championships and on to Eastern Junior 3 Championships at Sugarloaf. Racing kicked off with a Super-G in which Piper and Jonny each took 15th. In the giant slaloms, Ian Clarke took 11th while Alli Price took fifth and Piper sixth for the girls. Slalom racing saw Jonny take third and Piper fifth; Ian Clarke ended the day in 30th position.
In J4 State Championships at Pico, Matt Price won the slalom, while Tessa Queirolo (18), Felicia Ayer (23), Mikayla Stolar (24) and Tory Dobyns (25) represented in the girls in the top 30. In the giant slalom, Matt finished the day in 22nd after second-run trouble kept him from matching his fifth-place first run; Tessa took 22nd and Mikayla 26th.
At J2 Nationals last week, Wyatt Queirolo and James Ferri traveled to California's Mammoth Mountain to take on the best racers in their age group from throughout the United States. Competition opened with downhill on March 7, and Wyatt led the charge to take 10th in the race; James was seven hundredths of a second out of 30th place, landing in 31st. In the Super-G, Wyatt edged James as they took 42nd and 43rd, while James just missed the top 30 in the giant slalom with a 33rd-place finish. Racing wrapped up with the slalom, in which James had the 11th-fastest first run but then had trouble in the second run and finished the day in 36th; Wyatt took 25th.
Meanwhile, another group of KMS student-athletes traveled to the Western Region Junior Championships, taking advantage of both an additional six race starts—two each of slalom, giant slalom and Super-G—as well as the opportunity to experience racing in Idaho. Ben Scheu led the charge in the Super-G races, taking 15th the first day and 14th the second day, where he was joined in the top 30 by Cam Price, who evenly halved his starting position to take 23rd, and by Mike Ferri, who took 28th. Cam led the way in the giant slalom races, taking 17th in the first and being joined in the top 30 by Kyle Burcin, who took 21st; Cam and Kyle stepped up in the second race to take 11th and 12th, respectively. Mike Ferri just missed the top 30 and ended the day in 32nd, while Jeffry Griffen moved up 40 positions and had his best GS finish of the season; Jeffry also had a pair of career-best Super-G finishes at the series. Alyce Ritchey earned the women's "Attack from the Back" award for the largest move upward in both GS races (41 and 50 spots).
The series wrapped up with a pair of slaloms in which above-freezing overnight temperatures led to a low rut. Cam managed to ski through the conditions to finish, taking 41st and 37th after starting 114th and 113th, and Kyle was the only KMS racer in the top 30 as he took 17th in the second slalom and earned the title of top J2 in the series.
Ian Clarke won each run of last Saturday's Sun Mountain Showdown at Bromley Mountain to take a convincing 1.87-second victory overall. Cam Heald had a third-place first run but double-ejected during his second run and did not finish the race, while Erik Weiss took 17th and Patrick Salisbury-Jennings 19th.
Also this past weekend, Marina Rotella raced in the Eastern J3 Finals at Killington. She finished ninth in the first giant slalom on Friday and then took advantage of firmer snow on Saturday to place sixth in the second GS. Unfortunately, she had trouble in the slalom and didn't finish either of her two runs.
With Vermont J3 State Championships wrapping up and Vermont J4 State Championships beginning, KMS and KSC/KMS racers took another 10 front-page finishes this past weekend. Jonny Schwartz and Alli Price had the top finishes at the J3 events, with Jonny taking third in the boys' slalom and Alli taking fourth in the girls' giant slalom. The girls had trouble putting two clean runs together in Saturday's slalom; Ava Mattsson had the best pair of runs to take 16th, while Alli was less than two tenths off the first-run leader but had trouble in her second run and ended the day in 29th overall. Piper Jenne had trouble on the first run and then skied her way to the sixth-fastest second run after starting from the back.
On Sunday, the girls bounced back from Saturday's challenges and "skied a great race," said coach Will Courtney. Alli took fourth to lead Piper (12), Ava (15), Marina (18) and Sarah Mason (21) into the top 30.
Meanwhile, boys' racing at Sugarbush was delayed by a day due to the weather, pushing their slalom to Sunday and the giant slalom to Monday. Jonny "stuck with it and finished," ending the day in third overall after battling to stay in the course during the second run. Patrick Salisbury-Jennings was the next-fastest Killington skier, moving up over 50 spots to finish 40th.
In the giant slalom, the boys made some adjustments after the first run to put down top-10 second run times—Jonny, Ian Clarke, and Cam Heald finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively, on the run to end the day in 11th, 14th and 18th overall.
Based on their performances at state championships, Alli, Piper and Ava have qualified for Eastern J3 Championships at Sugarloaf; Marina was named first alternate and qualified along with Sarah Mason to J3 Finals today through Sunday at Killington, where they will be racing for start positions at Eastern J3 Championships. On the boys' side, Jonny, Cam and Ian qualified for Eastern J3 Championships.
As J3 State Championships wrapped up, J4 State Championships began with Sunday's Super-G at Stratton. Matt Price took fourth to lead five BOOST and KSC/KMS boys in the top 30; he was joined there by Alden Anderson (15), Tommy Kenosh (16), Crawford Jones (22) and Joseph Salisbury-Jennings (24), who cut 30 spots—over half—off his starting position. On the girls' side, Grace Vollers took ninth and Caroline Keller 13th.
