With just over two months remaining, KMS needs your support of the 2011-12 annual fund! The annual fund is the largest single source of donated support for KMS student-athletes as they pursue excellence in ski racing, freestyle skiing, freeskiing, snowboarding and cycling. Your contributions help provide the top-caliber teachers, coaches and facilities that these student-athletes need as they work towards the top levels of competition.

Donate online today or call Barb Deubel at 802.422.5671 x. 216 to make your contribution.

To those of you who have already donated, thank you; your continued support makes it possible for us to provide KMS student-athletes with the support they need as they pursue a rigorous academic program while skiing, riding and cycling at an elite level.

The men's team contingent in Austria—Cameron Price, Kyle Burcin, and Mike Ferri, under the direction of Coach Jake Bailey—has continued its early season Austrian swing with a pair of giant slalom races at Jerzens-Hoczeiger. Although challenging course sets and varied terrain have kept the racers on their toes, Coach Bailey's reports via the Men's Team blog indicate strong improvements on a daily basis and, overall, a "great learning experience from the land of Benni Raich."

Meanwhile, the KMS mogul competitors training in Apex, British Columbia, have wrapped up and the crew has headed south. While regional competitors will be returning to Vermont and getting ready for the Greg Francouer Memorial competition at Sugarloaf/USA on December 30 and 31, competitors targeting national- and international competition this season will be competing at U.S. Selections events in Steamboat, Colorado during the coming week.

FIS racing is scheduled to begin today in Alaska, where members of the men's and women's alpine teams will be looking to build on the front-page results they posted at Mammoth.

Site work is underway for the new trampoline facility at KMS.
Site work is underway for the new trampoline facility at KMS. Many thanks to donors who have allowed KMS to make this a reality and provide our student athletes with indoor, year-round access to trampline facilities, regardless of the weather.

With Killington open for skiing and riding since Saturday, October 29, KMS has been one of only two schools in the East to enjoy skiing and riding on its home mountain through most of November. KMS student-athletes have been on snow at Killington for the past two weeks to make the best use of Killington’s open terrain, and they have also scheduled trips to other regions—such as Mammoth Mountain, California, and to Colorado’s Summit County—when the specialized terrain they need to prepare for early season competitions is not yet available at Killington. Watch the KMS Facebook page for regular updates from coaches both at Killington and across the continent.

The KMS Cycling Team had another strong weekend, with Brendan taking two wins to lead the team’s eight top-10 finishes this past weekend. Check out a few photos and the full report from Coach Vollers on the KMS Cycling Team blog.

As KMS continues to grow—with new offerings such as the KMS Nine-Month Program and the KMS Cycling Team, as well as with the continued success of student-athletes in the five-month program—we have decided to select an official KMS mascot. Nominations for worthy animals may be submitted to KC Gandee (kgandee@killingtonmountainschool.org) until this Friday, Nov. 18, at noon.  KC will then forward the nominations to a special committee that will narrow the list to a small number of finalists to be voted upon by the entire community. Send in your nomination today!

KC Gandee, snowboard program director, has organized a club climbing team for KMS student-athletes. The team will train at the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center each Friday evening and athletes will have the option of competing on a monthly basis. Prior climbing experience is not necessary, and the cost is minimal—the only requirement is admission to the GMRCC ($6 per visit or $150 for a membership valid through August 31, 2012). Contact KC via email (kgandee@killingtonmountainschool.org) or phone (802.422.5671 x. 278) with any questions.

The BOOST Thanksgiving Camp and BOOST Fundamentals Session are just around the corner and followed closely by a limited number of opportunities for younger student-athletes to taste the ski academy life at KMS. Participants in the BOOST program train with KMS coaches and study under the direction of KMS faculty; visit the BOOST website or contact Margaret Schalchter (mschlachter@killingtonmountainschool.org / 802.422.5671 x. 206) for more information.

The KMS Cycling Team has continued to charge forward, with Erin Donahue taking the overall women’s title at the New England Prep School Mountain Bike Championship this past weekend. Also claiming a podium finish was kids’ racer Jack Watson, who took second in his class at the Cycle-Smart International Verge Series race over the weekend. Check out the KMS Cycling Team blog for more information and photos from the races.

Next week’s Tuesday-night gym festivities will be preceeded by Italian night in the Revelon Dining Room. All student-athletes are invited and encouraged to join in a community dinner before games in the gym, which will wrap up around 7:45 p.m., when day students may be picked up at Killington Elementary School.
