ACADEMICS
The staff at Killington Mountain School is an extremely well qualified and dedicated group of professional educators. Our teachers are sensitive to the needs of our students and work closely with sending schools and teachers as our students transfer to KMS for the winter months. KMS covers traditional middle and high school curricula at all levels including honors and advanced placement. In addition, our staff can create courses in many academic areas, including languages, arts and other electives.
KMS’ unique, one-on-one classroom ratio provides students with the personal attention and instruction to excel academically. Students carry their sending school courses over into their KMS term. Those courses are picked up and taught by the experienced KMS faculty. Communication with parents and the sending schools is constant. Every Friday a Weekly Academic Report for each student in all subjects is emailed to the sending school teacher, the sending school counselor and the student’s parent. The Killington Mountain School faculty will teach over four hundred different courses on average each year; a testament to the strength and diversity of our teachers. In addition, because we are a state of Vermont approved independent school, our students may take KMS-offered elective courses for credit; many students sign up for courses ranging from French to Photography, to Comparative Religions to Mid-East Studies to Creative Writing. As a state-accredited school, our credits are transferable and accepted by public and private schools across the country.
Even though KMS is a ski and snowboarding academy, academics is our first priority. Our goal is to make sure that students learn and when they return to their sending schools they are up to date and ready to fit back into their classes. While individual responsibility to one's own academic success is a key component in the KMS experience; teachers, coaches, and dorm staff work closely together to ensure that KMS students make efficient use of their time for academics, both on the road and at home.
College Placement We take great pride in the success of our competitors on the slopes, but we are also fully aware of the absolute necessity for a strong academic background during the junior high school and high school years. |
