Killington Mountain School athletes descended on the Eastern States Cup Downhill event in full force this weekend. The event at Thunder Mountain, MA was the first event for KMS’s new Gravity MTB team. Academy athletes Jamie Arquit, Tye McBroom, and Matthew Krimmel raced alongside KMS alumni Mazie Hayden (Class of 2018) and KMS Gravity Camp athletes Owen Crossman and Gabe Johnson.
With rain earlier in the week and cold temperatures over the weekend, course conditions were wet and challenging on the rocky and roots course. Athletes were required to stay calm on very demanding New England single-track that made traction scarce and line choice critical.
Despite the conditions, KMS athletes attacked the track and earned some impressive results including:
Mazie Hayden- 1st Place Pro Women and top speed Women
Gabe Johnson- 1st place U12 Boys and top speed U12 Boys
Jamie Arquit- 5th Place U15 Boys
Owen Crossman- 9th Place U15 Boys
Tye McBroom- 24th Place Amateur Men 16-29
Coach Jeff Juneau commented, “It was so cool to see three generations of KMS cyclists compete and race so well this weekend. Having our athletes come here and challenge themselves on this course in difficult conditions speaks volumes about their passion and dedication to the sport. We are so amped support our athletes with the new Gravity MTB Program here at KMS. We have had such a strong history in all other areas of cycling- road, cyclocross, and XC mountain bike, that it is a natural progression to give Gravity athletes access to all of the tools KMS offers athletically and academically.”
The next few weeks of training for the team will be in preparation for the Eastern State Cup DH finals at Mt Snow Oct 13 & 14.
