COVID-19 KMS Academic Update, April 24, 2020

Dear Students, Parents, and Teachers -

I hope that everyone has had a successful first week back in school.

A quote from a recently-read short story collection by N.K. Jemisin seems relevant to our current experience: “...Without contrasts, how does one appreciate the different forms that joy can take?” To be sure, there is a lot of “contrast” in our lives right now. But all of these changes bring things into a different light, give us a different perspective. As a result, I see a deep respect for teachers and a deep appreciation for our students. We are happy to see you all again!

I am convinced that there will be many positive outcomes - including the opportunity to invest your time and energy into learning or starting something new. With that in mind, here are some options to prepare for and take advantage of this summer:

  • UVM’s Summer Academy, now offered fully online, is open for enrollment for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students, providing them with the unique opportunity to earn 3 college credits through intensive 4-week courses. Dual enrollment options are also available through CCV.

  • The Governor's Institute of Vermont (GIV) will offer online programming this summer. It's not too late to apply at Tuition is now pay what you can, seniors can attend after graduation, and deadlines and application fees are waived.

  • The 2020 Vermont Young Writers' Conference will go on via one VIRTUAL writing conference from Thursday, June 25, to Sunday, June 28. VYWC's virtual platform will allow them to also consider any adult applicant who would like to attend the conference. To accommodate this change, they have extended the APPLICATION DEADLINE to May 14. For more information, please visit their website:

Take care,

April Hayden
