KMS 1st Day of Giving Back a great success
Towards the end of the 2018-19 school year, one of the main topics of discussion throughout the KMS community was to formalize a way to give back to the community. The school asked ourselves - How can a group of people that are so lucky with the life we lead find a way to help out with others?
Fast forward to the start of a new school year. Head of School, Tao Smith, and the faculty have spent considerable time discussing the core values that drive the school. The value of Responsibility pervades throughout and is summed up in a saying that all students that have passed through the halls of KMS have heard many times:
“Take care of yourself, take care of each other, take care of the world around you.”
On September 27, 2019 - the entire student body participated in the first monthly Day of Giving Back. This program will happen at least once a month throughout the entire school year, and in which faculty and students alike will participate in a project or program that “takes care of the world around us”
This first day of giving back offered three different activities. A group of students in Paddy Martin’s shop class went to a local residence and renovated and rebuilt an ADA walkway to allow the resident to get better access to his home. The second group of students and faculty took over the KMS Kitchen and made food for a family that is battling cancer. The balance of students and faculty chose a local person, business, entity, or organization that was near and dear to them and wrote them a thank you note - A thank you for just being a part of the community - a thank you for making the world around us more special.
In turn, we have already received numerous thank you notes back from the recipients of the Day of Giving Back and we can’t wait for the next one.
