Student of the Week - Lizzie DeGraw

Congratulations to Lizzie DeGraw, who was named Student of the Week at Wednesday's all-school meeting. Lizzie is an 11th grade Alpine athlete who comes to KMS from Mendon, VT. She was nominated for this award by World Languages Department co-chair, Claudia Revenko-Bowen.

Claudia commented, "Eleanor Roosevelt once said, 'You have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.' As I reflect on this quote stated by one of the most prominent female figures in the United States, I really do think of Lizzie. Through the past few weeks, I have been so inspired by Lizzie’s perseverance and drive. She had surgery not long ago, and she still took time to plan ahead, remaining prepared for both language and TED courses, never missing a beat academically. She continually communicates regarding lessons and assignments, even though we are thousands of miles away. She is a true independent and global learner who is willing to take chances and try her best even when the path ahead may seem to have sharp turns. You are most deserving of this recognition, and keep up the amazing work Lizzie!"

Science Department Chair Terri Isidro agreed with the nomination, "I, too, wish to nominate Lizzie this week. Lizzie shows a quiet dedication on her science studies that never wanes, and I am sure this is the case in her other classes and endeavors. She always gives her best effort, is kind, friendly, and supportive to students and staff alike, and she has an inner strength that allows her to persist through injuries and difficulties. Lizzie is a great example of RILER and one of those delightful people you look forward to interacting with each day. It's a privilege to teach her!"

English instructor Nate Clifford felt Lizzie was a deserving recipient of the award as well, He commented, "Lizzie has been one of the highlights for me coming to KMS. From our first conversation around The Great Gatsby and its symbolic use of color during my visit to the school last year, Lizzie has displayed a keen interest in literature and a sense of humor that enhances any assignment. Her quirky authenticity is creative, humble and brings a verve to many of our conversations. Lizzie has also been instrumental in communicating with classmates, leading discussions and activities in class. She is always willing to put herself out to bring something better to us all."

Social Studies Department Chair Courtney O'Keefe rounded out the nominations, "I also would like to add my support for Lizzie's nomination for Student of the Week this week. Although I do not have her in class this year, I know that Lizzie is deserving of such a recognition. As a student, she is highly motivated, focused, and determined to do her best. She approaches every assignment and assessment given to her with the mindset to not only effectively demonstrate her understandings of the subjects and topics covered in class, but also to use these as a means to continue to develop her already strong academic skills. She is an asset to any classroom as she contributes productively to all class discussions, often times quietly leading and supporting her peers as they explore their own personal thoughts and ideas related to the topics being studied. It is obvious to all those who teach her currently as well as those who have taught her in the past that she is a student which sees the value in a 21st Century education and how it can aid in her personal and academic growth and development. Overall, Lizzie is a kind and respectful young woman who is a positive source of encouragement and support within our community. Whether she realizes it or not, Lizzie impacts all of us for the better with her kind, supportive nature as well as with her quiet leadership. Congratulations, Lizzie! We are very proud!"
