The Black Bear Community Award is given by the KMS faculty to recognize those within our community who go above and beyond to benefit the many different demographics within our school. These individuals selflessly dedicate their time and energy to improving our community without any expectation of recognition or reward. We are incredibly grateful and humbled by the level of selfless commitment that many within our community show on a daily basis. Their willingness to contribute positively fosters an environment where everyone can reach their fullest potential, strive for excellence in both personal and professional growth, and experience the unique opportunities that set KMS apart from other educational and athletic institutions.

Our recognition this week goes to the KMS Freestyle team for their impactful contributions to the success of the KSC Future Stars Mogul Competition. This event, which took place two weeks ago, is part of the KMS/KSC Future Stars program, an incredible opportunity for younger, upcoming athletes—ages 5 ½ to 9—to experience our programs. Athletes in this program explore all skiing disciplines and end the season by participating (for fun!) in one race, one moguls competition, and one park competition.

Our Freestyle team assisted with the creation of a real three-line mogul course for this event, including mapping out and executing the design of each line. Freestyle athletes Evelyn Perkins and Ryan Cunningham also volunteered their time to be judges during the event, drawing upon their experience and expertise to evaluate the talents of these budding young athletes. As Kris Pepe, Freestyle Program Director, stated, “It was a super fun event, and a great first introduction to mogul skiing for these young ones!” Chuck Hughes, KMS/KSC Competitions Program Director and KMS Events Manager, agreed, adding, “I second this community recognition! It was an amazing event that saw 51 young athletes and a crowd of close to 70 parents and spectators come together to cheer on these future stars!”

Please join us in congratulating the KMS Freestyle team—not only did they do an amazing job building a fantastic venue and judging the competition, but they also provided these young athletes with inspiring role models to look up to. Thank you all!
