Academic Standout - Sam A.

Please join the KMS teaching faculty in congratulating our first Academic Standout of the new school year: Sam Ableson! Sam is a 12th-grade Freeski athlete from Center Harbor, New Hampshire. He received strong support for this recognition, with each nomination highlighting his commitment to growing as a learner, his deep curiosity, and his consistent, positive impact in the classroom. We can think of no better student to begin our year of academic recognition!
Putting for the first nomination for Sam, as well as presenting for him at this week’s all-school meeting, is English Department Chair Dr. Mara Taylor. Mara reflects, “In English, Sam is meeting every expectation in terms of academic responsibility: coming to class on time, alerting me about upcoming absences, turning in his work on time (sometimes ahead of time), making productive use of class time, and showing respect for myself and his classmates. What makes Sam stand out, however, is his class engagement. He doesn't just dutifully meet my expectations as his teacher. Rather, he seems invested: He asks questions when he doesn't understand, he listens to me and his classmates, he asks his classmates what they think. He laughs a lot. He makes learning joyful—for not just himself, but for all! He also has stood out as a writer this year. He has shown remarkable patience and stamina turning in draft after draft, improving his personal essay. And he's a master at the concrete noun. His writing has been an exemplar for others in this way.”
Seconding this nomination is Full-Term Math and Science Teacher and KMS Registrar Brigette Muller. Brigette writes, “Sam is such a joy to have in class! Sam comes to class and gives 100% every day. He comes to class to learn, even when he’s tired or gets frustrated. He sticks with a problem and works on it not only until it is complete, but until he understands why we took every step that we did. Sam often asks me questions that make me have to stop and think, which deepens the understanding of everyone in the class as well! His positive attitude brings up the vibe of the entire class, and encourages his classmates to work harder too!”
